One of the best things about staying in Halifax is how easy it is to explore the rest of Nova Scotia. Within a couple of hours, you can be standing at the edge of the world's highest tides, sipping wine in a vineyard, or wandering through a UNESCO World Heritage town. Here are our favourite day trips from Halifax.
1. š Peggy's Cove ā Nova Scotia's Most Iconic Landmark
Just 45 minutes southwest of Halifax, Peggy's Cove is one of the most photographed places in Canada. The iconic red-and-white lighthouse perched on massive granite boulders overlooking the Atlantic Ocean is truly breathtaking. The small fishing village nearby is equally charming, with local artists, fresh seafood shacks, and a warm Maritime welcome.
š” Pro Tip: Go early morning (before 9am) to have the lighthouse almost entirely to yourself. The golden morning light on the rocks is absolutely magical.
2. š Bay of Fundy ā Witness the World's Highest Tides
The Bay of Fundy is a natural wonder unlike anything else on Earth. With tidal changes of up to 16 metres (53 feet), the bay transforms completely twice a day. Walk on the ocean floor at low tide, then watch the water rush back in just hours later. The Hopewell Rocks in New Brunswick (about 2.5 hours from Halifax) are the most dramatic spot to experience this phenomenon.
š” Pro Tip: Check the tide schedule before you go ā timing your visit around low tide is essential for the full experience.
3. š· Annapolis Valley Wine Country
About 1.5 hours from Halifax, the Annapolis Valley is Nova Scotia's premier wine region with over 20 wineries producing world-class wines. The scenery is stunning year-round, but fall is especially magical when the vineyards turn gold and red.
Benjamin Bridge ā Famous for their Nova 7 sparkling wine, one of Canada's most celebrated wines.
Domaine de Grand PrĆ© ā A historic winery with a beautiful restaurant and stunning vineyard views.
Lightfoot & Wolfville ā Certified organic wines with a gorgeous tasting room overlooking the valley.
4. šļø Lunenburg & Mahone Bay ā UNESCO Heritage & Colourful Charm
About an hour south of Halifax, Lunenburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most colourful, picturesque towns in all of Canada. The waterfront is lined with brightly painted heritage buildings, fishing boats, and excellent seafood restaurants. Nearby Mahone Bay is equally charming, famous for its three churches reflected in the harbour.
